Black Bear Pass, Colorado

The run

Black Bear is short but serious. One-way, downhill only past the summit, with the infamous stair-step switchbacks above Telluride that leave zero room for error. This is a full-size-rig graveyard for the overconfident.

Air down at the top of the pass off Highway 550. The alpine section is stunning, but the descent is where the trail earns its reputation. Point-and-go on the switchbacks; multi-point turns on shelves barely wider than your track.

Know before you go

Weather turns fast above 12,000 feet. Afternoon thunderstorms are common and the exposed sections are no place to be in the wet. Roll out early.

The payoff

Bridal Veil Falls and the whole box canyon opening up below you. Worth every switchback.
